 Q. Connecting to GA3 using FileMaker Go and 3G for iPhone / iPad

Back PDF

The following guide is for connecting to the network edition of Garage Assistant GA3 using FileMaker Go for your iPhone or iPad

Note that '3G' is not your local network

First of all, when you are connected via 3G you are not on your local network, therefore FileMaker Go will not be able to find your files using your local ip address i.e 192.168.1.3.  This IP address only exposes inside your local network.

You need to connect via the IP Address provided by your internet service provider.
If you are unsure what this is then use a website such as http://whatismyip.com
to help discover your IP address.
Some ISP's provide static IP addresses, this is great since it will always remain the same.
Others provide dynamic IP addresses, therefore at any time, or when you re connect your WAN IP will change.

Configure your Router/Modem

Even with the correct IP address, your router will need to know which machine it should forward inbound traffic to, if you have 5 machines on your network your router cannot be expected to scan each machine to see which one is a Garage Assistant Server.

This differs on a local network because you yourself are telling the router which machine to use by using that machines local IP address.

For this you need to set TCP Port 5003 to forward to your local IP Address

So for instance, your server is on 192.168.1.3.
You would forward all inbound traffic on port 5003 to 192.168.1.3

When accessing your network via the internet using for example 39.63.182.56 your modem/router would forward your connection directly to the server.

As an example, here is a screenshot of our D-Link DSL Router/Modem

If you are unsure on how to set up port forwarding, consult the documentation for your router, there should be information on doing this.  Failing that, you should be able to find the information on google by searching for 'port forwarding {your modem name & model here} '
